碩士 === 明道大學 === 設計學院碩士班 === 96 === A Study of Yon-Chin Wang, the founder of Formosa Plastics Group, on his Contribution to the Development of Taiwan Design In the late 50s and 60s Taiwan started to develop “Design”. At that time ,economic minister, Li Guoding, learning the knowledge that if the government wants to develop industry and commerce, it must to promote the “industrial design”. Therefore ,the” China Productivity Center”(CPC)was established in1960 ,that is the organization specialize in design. In order to promote this project, CPC invited some professional designers in the US, Japan, German and various countries to come to Taiwan and give discourse. These experts also caused some Taiwan’s industrialist such asYon-Chin Wang, Lin Taisheng to pay attention to design project. Formosa Plastics Group’s entrepreneur Yon-Chin Wang started to hire painters , Huo-cheng Ye, Xian-mu Lin et al. ,to make the plastic cloth flower design in Nan Ya Plastics Corporation. In 1946, Ming Chi University Of Technology established the first industrial design department at the Japanese professional designers expert , suggestion; moreover, to recruit overseas students who majored in design and to dispatch student studying abroad short-term. These students were elite in Taiwan. In order to make the practice and the theory parallel development, the first Mandarin design magazine “Industrial Design” (quarterly publication) , which had 30 year history since1968, was published by the Formosa Plastics Group Corporation. The magazine has played an important role in Mandarin design from First issue to the present. Besides Ming Chi University Of Technology, Chang Gung University was found the industrial design department, training lots of elite in design. All of the above,Formosa Plastics Group’s entrepreneur had invested in Taiwan’s industrial design with whole life, no matter were the official, produces, studies, being possible be called had lasting achievements. Now a day Formosa Plastics Group Enterprise designs the history, might also say that was a Taiwan design history.
