The researcher tries to explore the characteristics of Chen’s clerical script, and also to analyze the relationship between the written Chinese characters of seals and the concept of his clerical script. This study consists of seven chapters. In Chapter One, the researcher explains his motives and purposes for choosing this subject, goes through the literature on this subject, and chooses the method of this study. In Chapter Two, the researcher describes the calligraphic development in Chen’s era, which was during the reign of Qanlong and Jiaqing. At that time, paleography and epigraphy enjoyed a revival of interest. The study of inscriptions on precipices and stones was greatly in vogue among calligraphers. Chen Hongshou applied his studies in paleography and calligraphy to the art of seal carving, and thus led the Xiling School to greater achievement. In Chapter Three is a brief introduction of Chen’s whole life. The researcher deals with the context of Chen’s study progress in calligraphy, and his ideals for calligraphy in Chapter Four. In Chapter Five, the researcher delves into Chen’s calligraphic creations, including seal script, clerical script, standard script, running script and cursive script. In Chapter Six ,through the analysis of Chen’s calligraphic creations, the researcher tries to understand the origin of Chen’s clerical script and the calligraphic figures of clerical script. The conclusion of this research is in Chapter Seven. Wei-teh Chen 陳維德 2008 學位論文 ; thesis 272 zh-TW
