The capabilities building and upgrading are the foundation of SME’s growth through inter-firm’s relations especially the subcontracting business with big companies. The study discussed the process and stage of the SME’s growth via resource-based view of the firm, inter-firm’s relation, organizational learning, and dynamic capability of the firm. A case study had been conducted to observe the building process of the capabilities of the firm and the growing stage of SMEs under subcontracting relations with big company. The study found that the capabilities of the firm will be upgraded by subcontractor’s requirement and SME’s learning behavior. And three stages of the SMEs growth will be divided: 1. the dependent stage: SME rely on business from subcontractors, and instruction or consulting by subcontractors as the source of capabilities building and upgrading. Therefore, for maintaining the relationship, SMEs do more effort to develop their capabilities for enhance the service quality of subcontracting business. 2. the interdependent stage: the subcontracting business will be adjusted to discuss by each other regarding to the SMEs enhance their capabilities and provide valuable opinion to subcontractor for adjusting the subcontracting content. 3. the independent stage: the inter-firm relation changed from partnership to transaction-base under the rise and fall of the capability between SME and subcontractor.
