The written contracts were signed in Kinmen in the years between the 44th year in the reign of the Emperor Kanghsi and the 3rd year in the reign of the Emperor Hsuantung during the Ching Dynasty (1705-1911). First, those original copies of ancient documents were collected and preserved. Then, the key points from the contracts were analyzed by means of their contents. Finally, the relationships between the lives of the inhabitants and the contents of the contracts in ancient Kinmen were explored accordingly. This study is composed of five chapters. Chapter I makes the introductions. Chapter II discusses the natural environment , administrative districts and social backgrounds in Kinmen. Chapter III makes a close analysis of those ancient contracts. Chapter IV indicates the social surroundings shown behind the scenes of the contracts. Chapter V makes a conclusion. Furthermore, the completion of this study can receive favorable responses to the collection and preservation of local ancient documents in Kinmen. The contents shown in the contracts may provide first-hand information for studying Kinmen social history and economic history. On the other hand, they are a good supplement to insufficient data concerning Kinmen local history, which will surely help the potential researchers a lot in the future.
