Although the stress and strain distribution plays as an important role in the tooth structure when occlusion forces are applied, periodontal ligament has not been understood clearly so far. The objective of this study is to investigate the elastic modulus of periodontal ligament (PDL) from the engineering view point by using numerical and experimental approach. The numerical study based on inverse engineering approach in both one-dimensional and two-dimensional model is applied to validate the feasibility of this study. Experiments are carried on a minipig’s PDL to acquire the deformation when low magnitude occlusion forces are applied. Finite Element model are then constructed to compute the elastic modulus by using the experimental results. Results show the elastic modulus of PDL is 1.16Mpa on the mandibular first premolar(right side)、0.76Mpa on the mandibular second premolar(right side) and 0.61Mpa on the mandibular second premolar(left side). Moreover, it is shown that the strain can be distributed more uniformly by the PDL and periodontal ligament can have significant influences to reduce the stress concentration in the tooth structure.
