Eight hundred and Eighty female nurses who provided direct patient care in a medical center in southern Taiwan were invited to complete a structured questionnaire. Seven hundred and nighty one nurses successfully completed the survey with a response rate of 89.9%. The workplace violence divided into only verbal violence and threatened violence (including physical assault).
Results showed that there were 645 (81.5%) nurses encountered the workplace violence in the last year. Among these violences, only verbal violence was 60.5%, and the threatened violence (including physical assault) was 39.5%. The sources of workplace violence toward the nurses came from the patients (61.4%), the family members (60.8%), and from the medical colleagues (48%). The nurses working at the psychiatry department were more likely to have the experiences of threatened violence than that of working at the other departments. The scores of emotional reaction among nurses with the experiences of threatened violence(including physical assault) were significantly higher than those who experienced only verbal violence. The standard scores of the emotional reaction of the workplace violence was 49.3 which was in the median level of reaction. Nurses who were unmarried, with an education level at/or higher than university and working in the general wards were more likely to have significantly higher emotional scores than those who were married or with a college educational level or working in the outpatient department or emergency unit. Similarly, when the source of workplace violence came from colleagues, the emotional scores were significantly higher than that came from the patients and their families.
The findings of this study would provide the evidence of workplace violence in hospital and it may help hospital and nursing administrators in reducing and controlling the incidents of workplace violence.
