Design: Prospective Interventional Study Design Setting: The anesthetic pre-operative evaluation clinic and pain clinic of Pingtung Christian Hospital in Taiwan. Participants: For post-operative pain, sixty-one patients receiving PCA were assigned to an experimental group (n=30) or a control group (n=31). For MP, sixty-two patients sick-listed for more than three months for MP were randomized to an experimental group (n=32) or a control group (n=30). Interventions: For post-operative patients, the experimental group was then educated with an seven-minute multimedia video CD about surgical pain and PCA, then furnished with handouts. For MP patients, both groups received a dry-needling procedure of trigger pointers and an affected-muscle stretch; the experimental group was then educated with an eight-minute multimedia video CD about MP syndrome and furnished with handouts. The inclusion period was from April 2007 to November 2007. Main Outcome Measure: For post-operative patients, surgical pain knowledge and were assessed at baseline and 3rd day after operation. Patient outcome questionnaire and satisfaction scores were performed 3rd day after operation. For MP patients, MP knowledge and the Brief Pain Inventory-Taiwan were assessed at baseline and at one month. Satisfaction scores were performed at one month. Result: For post-operative patients, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in pain knowledge and incidence of PCA side effect and satisfaction of PCA staff (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of pain intensity and interference due to pain. For MP patients, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in pain intensity of present pain and least pain and pain interference of general activity, mood, walking ability, normal work and relationship (95% C.I.). There was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in myofascal pain knowledge and satisfaction. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the importance of patient education programs in post-operative and chronic MP intervention. Hon-Yi Shi 許弘毅 2008 學位論文 ; thesis 99 zh-TW
