Description
Summary:碩士 === 高雄醫學大學 === 口腔衛生科學研究所碩士班 === 96 === Background The caries condition of children in Taiwan is very serious, and a large proportion of caries occurs in deciduous molars, causing more serious problems. There are lots of treatment methods to restore deciduous molars, and many researches reveal that the first selection to restore large cavities is the stainless steel crown. The stainless steel crowns can maintain deciduous teeth until replacing them, and in comparison with amalgam fillings, they are more effective and long-lived. At present, there are no associated researches about the utility rate of stainless steel crowns. The study surveyed the reasons of low utility rates of stainless steel crowns and provided related data. Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of the stainless steel crown in children and its association with the parents’ awareness, attitude, and acceptance of the stainless steel crown. Methods The study enrolled 559 parents whose children were under 12 years old and had dental treatment experience from the northern and the southern Taiwan. The study was surveyed by questionnaires, including the basic society demography, oral hygiene behavior, general knowledge about pediatric dentistry, and the awareness and acceptance of the stainless steel crown of the parents and their children. The data were analyzed by the statistics software of JMP6.0. Results Our study included 559 subjects, and it revealed that 23.9 percent of the children accept to wear stainless steel crowns and among of them, 5.97% of their parents request to wear stainless steel crowns their own. The proportion of wearing stainless steel crowns is higher in the northern Taiwan than in the southern Taiwan, and the boys are higher than the girls. The mothers who graduated from the collage or graduate school are more acceptable. The source of knowledge of the stainless steel crown of parents mainly comes from the dentists, dental assistants, and their relatives or friends. If their parents realized that the large cavity or tooth after root canal treatment must be restored by the stainless steel crown, and knew the item and fee of stainless steel crown fabrication in the dental clinic, they would be more acceptable to do it. Conclusions The study indicated that if their parents are aware of the function of stainless steel crowns, they will be more acceptable. Contrarily, if the parents do not realize the function of stainless steel crowns, there’re low proportion rates of acceptance. This is related to the unawareness of the stainless steel crown. Meanwhile, the fee of stainless steel crowns is the major factor that their parents accept stainless steel crowns. However, the suggestion of the dentists is always accepted by most parents.
