Summary: | 碩士 === 華梵大學 === 東方人文思想研究所 === 96 === This thesis is a study of the "Integration of Sutra and Tantra", which is based on the Tsong-Kha-Pa's "Lam Rim Chen Mo". It aims at unveiling his interpretation of how one can be freed from the desire realm, leave cyclic existence and actualize the Buddhahood by conjoining the methods of Sutra and Tantra.
The major question which has drawn my special interest is: what are the reasons that Sutra and Tantra can be connected as one vehicle to attain the Buddhahood? The method to approach this topic is firstly to extract the common theories of Sutra and Tantra from Tsong-Kha-Pa's renowned works, "Lam Rim Chen Mo" and "The Great Exposition of Secret Mantra". The second step is to elucidate the reasons that Sutra can and should integrate with Tantra by quoting "The Four Interwoven Annotations", "The Lotus Sutra" and also the other masters' commentaries. Eventually, the whole picture of Sutra and Tantra integration is presented to reach the goal of this research.
The present work is divided into 5 chapters. The first begins with an introduction of the study purpose and the approach method. The second traces and reviews the historical events from early India to Tsong-Kha-Pa's age. The third gives the common theories and teachings between Sutra and Tantra. The fourth illustrates the picture of how Sutra and Tantra are integrated by showing the key points in "The Four Interwoven Annotations", "The Lotus Sutra", along with the other masters' commentaries. The final chapter summarizes the Tsong-Kha-Pa's contribution to Tibetan Buddhism and concludes with clear answers to the above mentioned question.
