ON SHAPING A SCHOOL VISION

ABSTRACT
This research applies the method of action research to one Catholic high school of which the school vision is lacking, forming the pilot team, taking actions and shaping the school common vision.
The whole research process includes stating the issues of concern, drawing up the action plans, inviting and forming the pilot team, and taking actual actions. It comprises the following: identifying the elements of school vision; collecting the core values; describing the critical events; and recording the action process in detail. Through collecting and studying the related documents and materials, reviewing the history of the school, collecting the opinions of the stakeholders of the school with regards to its core values via interviews, round-table discussions and questionnaires, drafting the list of school core values, carrying out an analysis of the school situation, prioritizing, screening and concluding the school core values.
In addition, the pilot team in collecting, decoding, analyzing and interpreting the materials, invites an independent partner from outside, different from the school stakeholders, to give critical comments and suggestions, thus adding more credibility to the team’s conclusions and bringing them up to a professional standard. Finally, based on the core values associated with the existing reason of the case school as a Catholic High School and the future image of the school, the draft of a school vision is drawn up. The draft is then discussed and passed during the school meeting of all the faculty members, and later on is recognized by the Board of Trustees, thus fulfilling the administrative requirement, and then formally announced to the public.
The shaped school vision is as follows: ‘Inspired by the school motto of holiness, beauty, goodness and truth, and fired by the Christian virtue of charity, so and so Catholic High School nurtures our youth towards passion for life, holding in high esteem the values of respectfulness, gratitude, benevolence, responsible service, innovative excellence and openness to the world.’
After shaping the school vision, the announcing and realization of the school vision could be further action research topics for the case school.
