The intriguing result of the south- pointing chariot is that whichever way the chariot was turned the dummy immortal on the top always pointed in the same direction. Today, many south-pointing mechanisms are developed and some models are reproduced.
This study is to design and reconstruct a differential gearing type south-pointing chariot. The mechanism which adjusts the direction is very similar to that used in the back-axle of today’s motor vehicle. To keep the immortal retain the same direction, transmission gears and other components need to be manufactured very accurately. Therefore this thesis adopts modern CAD/CAE/CAM technology to design and reproduce a Chinese south-pointing chariot. First, the components are designed and assembled by commercial software UG®. Then motion of the assembled model is verified by software COSMOS/Works®. Finally, all the components including spur gears and bevel gears are processed by CNC machine center and wire cutting EDM to get the necessary accuracy.
After the Industrial Revolution, all kinds of gears are essential and important elements in machines. This study not only reconstructs an interesting Chinese ancient invention, but also gets some ideas on precision gear design and manufacture.
