In 2007, Shengli Zhang, Yu Zhu proposed a low complexity design which combines network coding and channel decoding together. We call it as soft network coding. Compared to the traditional network coding scheme, the soft network coding can reduce the complexity greatly with a little extra bit energy to achieve the same bit error rate. In this paper, we explore the performance of the soft network coding in AWGN and Rayleigh fading channel and compare it to the performance of the traditional network coding. From our simulations, to achieve the same bit error rate, the better channel coding is used, the more extra bit energy is needed. In the multi-input case of the soft network coding, the decoding complexity can be further reduced. From our simulations, a three-input soft network coding by using a convolutional code with 1/2 code rate and 4 memories, the complexity is reduced to 1/3 and 1.29 dB extra bit energy is required at bit error rate whem compared to the traditional network coding case.
