This paper will propose a novel multi-resolution contour-based feature called derivative distance descriptor (DER) for shape retrieval. The experiments are conducted on the MPEG-7 CE1 part B to test the performance of retrieval. Since user may input an incomplete shape as a query one, the experiment of incomplete shapes retrieval will be conducted on the incomplete contour representation (ICR) test to show the retrieval efficiency.
