The nonlinear behavior of the building simulated with two concentrated plastic hinges at the ends of beams and columns with Wen’s model. The bilinear model is adopted to simulate the nonlinear characteristics of the lead rubber bearings. The input ground motions are incorporated with a wide variety of ground accelerations: hanging walls, footwall, stiff site, medium site, and soft site. The records in Taipei basin from two different source mechanisms, the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake and the 2002 Huolian earthquake, are included in the nonlinear time history analysis. The nonlinear tuned mass damper can effectively reduce the drift ratio of buildings as well as the floor accelerations of the top story. This promising installation increases the significant capacity in the building at the expanse of significant displacements appearing in the tuned mass damper. The overturning of the tuned mass damper due to horizontal displacements accompanying with vertical excitation is identified for their stability. Alternative solutions to reduce the tuned mass damper displacements is to install an additional viscous damper. However, this may increase the drift ratio of the buildings. Therefore, this scheme is not proposed in this research. The fragility curves of the building are also developed to implement in the hazard planning.
