Wireless sensor network (WSN), with its low-cost and low-power advantages, is often used as methods of highly-efficient massive data collection and highly-efficient real-time transmission. However, how a large numbers of deployed sensors to create a secure group communication is currently the subject of keen concern. Because of the limited computing power and memory space of sensors, the exponential function and the more complex computing mechanisms such as public key cryptography are not appropriate. Unlike pre-stored key distribution mechanism, this study designed a hierarchical key distribution mechanism to expand wireless sensor networks’ areas and to have a shared key between the neighboring sensors. When the malicious nodes are discovered, the hierarchical key distribution mechanism can exclude them effectively. Furthermore, it has the characters of forward secrecy and backward secrecy, and it can effectively guard against the attacks such as eavesdropping and forgery under the resource constrained circumstances.
