The purposes of this research were to examine 1) nurses’ views of nursing, 2) their affirmation of the nursing experience, 3) their most frustrating experience and management of the frustrating experience in nursing, 4) their future expectations, 5) their feeling of nursing work after SARS, and to explore 6) the relationships among their demographic data and working characteristics as well as the above variables. A cross-sectional study design was employed using purposive sampling. Nurses were selected from different level of hospitals which were located in the middle of Taiwan. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. A total of 342 nurses participated in the study. Among them, most nurses were females (97.1%) and registered nurses (70.5%). Their average nursing experience was 6.22 years. Most nurses did not have SARS care experience (85.1%).
The results were as follows. 1. Nurses’ view of nursing: (a). For the “professional attitude” subscale, the item “nursing work requires commitment and conscience” got the highest score (M=4.43, SD=0.62). (b). For the “behaviors related to care of patient” subscale, the item “the work of nursing is to teach people the knowledge of health maintenance by self and self care” got the highest score (M=4.32, SD=0.64). 2. Affirmation of the nursing experience: (a). For the “Self-affirmation of professional ability” subscale, the item “when patient asked question, can reply confident” got the highest score (M=4.32, SD=0.62). (b). For the “Affirmation and feedback given by others” subscale, the item “patient can perform self-care procedure by nurse instruction” got the highest score (M=4.32, SD=0.61). 3. The most frustrating experience: (a). For the “Negative attitude of patients and their families” subscale, the item “misconception and declinature given by patients” got the highest score (M=4.11, SD=0.78). (b). For the “Insufficient support given by the profession and team” subscale; the item “poor support to the nursing profession from the organization” got the highest score (M=4.11, SD=0.76). 4. Management of the frustrating experience in nursing: (a). For the “Problem orientation” subscale, the item “reflects on the experience and considers it as a positive learning” got the highest score (M=4.35, SD=0.57). (b). For the “emotion orientation” subscale, the item “off-load by smoking or drinking” got the highest score (M=4.11, SD=1.15). 5. Future expectation: (a). “Enhancement of professional competency and changes of nursing policy” subscale, the item “hopes to increase nursing payment by the National Health Insurance” got the highest score (M=4.59, SD=0.56). (b) For the “Recognition and enhancement of professional roles” subscale, the item “hopes to allocate nursing manpower appropriately and fairly” got the highest score (M=4.63, SD=0.55). 6. After SARS epidemics, nurses’ feeling of work scale, the item “believes that sufficient nursing staff is crucial to nursing work” got the highest score (M=4.68, SD=0.54).
In addition, married nurses had higher scores in the “view of nursing” scale than unmarried nurses (t=-2.29, p<0.02). Having SARS care experience nurses also had higher scores in the “Affirmation of the nursing experience” scale than nurses without experience (t=1.97, p<0.04). Nurses who had one or more children had higher scores in the “view of nursing” (F=9.46, p<0.01) and the “affirmation of the nursing experience” (F=8.60, p<0.01) scales than nurses who had no children. Nurses who worked at medical centers had higher scores in the “after SARS epidemics, the nursing feeling of working” scale than nurses who worked at regional hospitals (F=3.34, p<0.03). Nursing working year and clinical working year are significantly correlated with the “view of nursing” (r=0.23, p<0.01) and “handling of the frustrated experience in nursing” (r=0.15, p<0.01) scales.
Based on these findings, hospital administrators could effectively improve nurses’ manpower, strengthen their specialized knowledge and the training, and establish a good care pattern. As a result, nurses can contribute their best in their field of practice.
