Three types of nanowires were studied. So far, focuses on the micro-phase separations for block copolymers, BCPs, were mainly placed on the two- or three- dimensional structures. The first theme of this study is thus the 1-D nanowires composed of polystyrene-b-polymethylmethacrylate diblock copolymer, PS-b-PMMA, and with the molecular weight ratio of PS to PMMA fixed at 7:3. With variations of the annealing temperature and time, the resulting micro-phase separation in the 1-D structure was observed and discussed. The second theme is to fabricate 1-D nanowires made of the polystyrene-b-polyisoprene diblock copolymer end-capped with gold nanoparticles, PS-b-PI-SH-AuNPs. The effect of the AuNPs in the nanowires was examined and discussed. The third theme of this study is to develop a novel method to fabricate the gold nanowires. Electro-deposition and chemical reduction from the template are the two often-mentioned methods to grow high-aspect-ratio nanowires. In this study, a novel reductive method for growing high-density and high-aspect-ratio nano-wires from an AAO template was proposed. With skillful arrangement, gold nanoparticles reduced from the solution of the hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (HAuCl4.3H2O) mixing with super-hydride (Li(C2H5)3BH) can be aggregated in the nanochannels of the AAO template and form long nanowires. Very high-density of high-aspect-ratio nanowires can be fabricated in the template within seconds. The present method is thus a relatively simple and low-cost method. The fabricated nanowires were then characterized by the scanning electron microscopy, the high resolution transmission electron microscopy, the X-ray diffraction, and the energy dispersive X-ray analysis.
