The Access Service Network provides layer 2 connectivity with the base station, mobility-related functions, QoS policies, and Internet accessibility for the mobile station. This Access Service Network gateway that we have designed shall support WiMAX reference point operations, manage base stations, and provide mobile IP functionalities. The Network Processor (Intel IXP 2400) that we are using is fully programmable and we shall show how our microcode implementations and core component changes fit into the entire software architecture to create Access Service Network gateway data plane functions. Details on how to integrate open source Mobile IP software with our data plane will also be provided. In the last section, several scenarios are built to verify the results of our implementations.
