SHALLOW SEISMIC EXPLORATION ACROSS THE CHAOCHOU FAULT

碩士 === 國立中正大學 === 地震研究所暨應用地球物理研究所 === 96 === Chaochou fault is one of the major active faults situated in southern Taiwan, separating the slate formation of the Central Mountain Range and the alluvial deposits of the Pingtung plain. A significant lineation structure along the foothill margin of the Central Mountain Range was used to be defined as the Chaochou fault; however, at south of the Chuokou River area, recent geology studies showed that the actual location of the Chaochou fault could be situated further westward from the lineation structure, at west of the river terraces. In this paper, we use shallow seismic method to illustrate the subsurface structure images across the Chaochou fault and the lineation structure. Combining the images of CMP stacked sections, the common offset sections, and the analyzed velocity distributions, the results show that at south of the Chuokou River, the Chaochou fault is situated in the plain area at about thirty meters west of the river terraces. In addition, the lineation structure at east of the terrace should be a back thrust of the Chaochou fault. Although the Chaochou fault is not active from seismic records, the fault is still a young active fault. Deploy the seismic line at an appropriate position and enhance the seismic energy, under carefully processing of seismic data, we still can use seismic reflection method to study the subsurface structure across the metamorphic rock.
