In this thesis Poly(benzimidazole) and sulfobutylated poly(benzimidazole) (PBI-BS) with various levels of sulfonation were synthesized. The PBI, PBI-BS, and various ratios of PBI/PBI-BS composite membranes were fabricated. The polymer structures and sulfonation level of PBI-BS were identified by FTIR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The physical properties of these membranes were investigated, including mechanical strength, thermogravimetric analysis, methanol permeability, gas permeability and conductivity. All of these membranes including PBI, PBI-BS and PBI/PBI-BS were than impregnating with phosphoric acid solution and were used to prepare membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA). These membrane were tested at 140oC to 180oC with pure oxygen and hydrogen and a flow rate of 300 ml min-1. In this study, we showed that PBI/PBI-BS composite membranes had better PEMFC performance than PBI at 140oC to 180oC.
