This research is based on “Treasure of Taiwan – Conservation Project for Artworks by Taiwan Early Art Masters,” co-operated by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the National Center for Research and Preservation of Cultural Properties. Twenty most serious damaged artworks were chosen to conduct examination for deterioration and conservation, and they were painted during 1952 to 1977 by Hsi De-jin (1923-1981). The survey of deterioration shows that oil paintings were constructed by different layers, including support layer, ground layer, paint layer and coating layer, each procedure has its own effect and purpose. Since each structure, have its different characteristics, preserving periods of the materials varies. Moreover, the key points that affect painting conservation are the materials artist chose to use and their preservation environment. The main reasons of painting deterioration include poor canvas material (including panels), improper pigments for painting, incorrect mount methods, terrible conservation environmental conditions, painting habits and characteristics of artists, biological deterioration, inappropriate preservation and conservation, deterioration of vanish layer…, etc. By examining the result of conservation, we found that torn ground canvas or aging fibers can be treated by grafting and transferring canvas into stable condition. Moreover, the choice of adhesive and restoration canvas using will determine the life-span of ground layer. In addition, loosen or undulated canvas need to be stretch tight to avoid paint layer cracking or peeling. Deterioration of paint layer is the most complicated part of oil painting deterioration, and the contradictive using of pigment and poor preserving environment are the main causes of paint flaking and lost. During this survey, we not only used reversible material to fill the lost part but also used mixture touches skill to repair the colors therefore present the complement of the paintings. Last but not least, deterioration of vanish coating layer will affect presentation of painting surface tone, and it need to be cleaned with organic solvent. By inducting and examining practical examples of oil painting restoration as well as conservation suggestions, this essay not only allows artists/painters to understand the materials they are using, but also offer references for painting deterioration, restoration, and conservation in the future. Furthermore, we hope this survey can offer bountiful resources for oil painting deterioration as well as be beneficial to practical restoration experience. none 廖志中 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 275 zh-TW |
