The participants included 756 fifth-grade students (395 boys and 361 girls) from nine elementary schools in Nan-Tou County. All students were asked to answer the questions on demographic data, Critical Thinking Test-LevelⅠ(CCT-Ⅰ) and Questionnaire of Critical Thinking Dispositions. The research methods used in this study included descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, t-test, Pearson product-moment correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The main results of this study are as it follows: 1. Among the five sub-skills, the students scored highest on recognition of assumptions and lowest on evaluation of arguments. The abilities of critical thinking disposition are greater than general intermediate levels. 2. Obviously the elementary school students with higher social economic status (SES) perform better on critical thinking abilities than those with lower SES. The elementary school students with higher social economic status (SES) perform better on critical thinking dispositions than those with lower SES. 3. There is no significant difference on critical thinking skills between boys and girls; however, girls get higher scores on critical thinking disposition. 4. The elementary school students with higher academic average grades perform better on critical thinking skills and critical thinking disposition. 5. The longer time students spend on watching television, the less ability they have on critical thinking skills and critical thinking disposition. 6. The TV programs mostly watched by elementary school students are movies, episodes and dramas, whereas the news programs are the least. There is no difference on elementary students'' critical thinking skills for different TV programs; but significant difference exists on critical thinking disposition. 7. The children''s SES, Mandarin grades and academic average grades could be used to predict obviously in their critical thinking skills; whereas the Social studies grades, the time of watching TV and SES are significantly in predicting children''s critical thinking disposition. none 巫銘昌 學位論文 ; thesis 108 zh-TW
