Abstract
The purposes of this study were to: (a) analyze the relation between perfectionism and fear of failure motivation of athletes in elementary school, (b) compare the differences between individual and team sport on perfectionism and fear of failure motivation, and (c) investigate the effect of perfectionism and fear of failure motivation on perceived exerted effort and future behavioral intentions of athletes in elementary school. The participants were 442 athletes in elementary school, and the age were 10-14 years old. The Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Performance Failure Appraisal Inventory, Measures of Perceived Exerted Effort Scale, and Measures of Future Behavioral Intention Scale were adopted for investigation in this study.
The results were as follows: (1) Perfection and fear of failure motivation were significantly related. (2) The variable of team athletes on “organization” of perfectionism is higher than individual athletes. (3) The “organization” of perfectionism could positively predict perceived exerted effort, but the prediction of “parents’ expectation” was negative. However, the fear of failure motivation could not predict perceived exerted effort. (4) The “organization” of perfectionism, the FE (fears of experiencing shame and embarrassment), and FH (fears of an uncertain future) could positively predict future behavioral intention; But the FI (fears of having important others lose interest) could not.
Explanations of the findings were offered, and applications of the study were discussed. Finally, some suggestions for future researches were identified and discussed.
