Twenty-four junior high school students were recruited to this study and assigned into training (T) and control (C) group with no difference in shooting performance before training. Subjects’ shooting time (mean), consistency (standard deviation), performance (mean) and consistency (standard deviation) were measured before and after training. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis and t tests were employed for statistic analysis. After 4 weeks of verbal instruction training, it was found that there was still no significant difference in shooting performance between two groups. In addition, shooting accuracy was positively correlated with performance after training in C (r=.62, p<.05), not in T (r=-.28) and shooting time was also positively correlated with performance after training in C (r=.66, p<.05), not in T (r=-.05). Moreover, shooting time was negatively correlated with performance consistency in C after training (r=-.64, p<.05). In conclusion, verbal instruction training didn’t affect shooting performance in novice shooters, which might be related to short training duration. For control group, the longer the shooting time, the better the performance consistency, indicating that novice shooter could develop their own shooting routine without verbal instruction training.
