Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen is one of the popular funeral performing art arrays in Taiwan. It is a sort of choir performing art arrays, mainly with songs, dialogues, dancing as well as the accompaniment of musician in the back court. Besides songs and dance, Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen surpasses other funeral performing art arrays, which mainly focus on performance, and further presents the function of religion. The Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen nowadays has been developed for many decades. The performing contents and styles have changed into the present mode based on the folk’s belief of death and their needs. The ceremony is completed through ritual music, by which Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen leads the death soul to pass through the chthonian path and the netherworld gates with gods’ blessings and protections, and finally to arrive at the nirvana with Buddah. Therefore, the ritual music is the carrier of Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen, going through the funeral ritual, and the intangible music constructs the invisible sacral space and sacral time and complete the mission of leading death souls.
The present study is to investigate the funeral ceremony of Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen, and discuss about its ritual and the ritual music. In the aspect of ritual, the analysis will focus on the background history, ritual elements, and the performance to understand Taiwanese folk’s belief. As for the ritual music, the analysis will focus on the tune patterns, singing styles, melody and lyrics to discuss the function and the meaning of Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen. It is hoped that the analysis on the ritual and the ritual music can provide the whole picture of the Qian-Wang-Ge- Zhen of the popular funeral performing art arrays in Taiwan.
