The study adopts both quantitative and qualitative approaches to analyze the programs performed in the theater. The analysis is aimed to understand the forms and content of the performance productions, the development of the programs, the relation with social changes, the process of cultural evolution, the functionality in education and tourist attraction and the application of music in performance arts. The findings of this study include: 1.The programs in the National Theater can be divided into five major categories. The most popular category would be dances, even though the popularity of other categories is also on the rise. 2.Most of the performers do not belong to any professional organizations. Dramas are limited to domestic troupes, whereas there are foreign productions performing in other categories. Foreigners take up one-third of the music performances, one-quarter of the dances, one-third of the musical productions and two-fifth of the miscellaneous category. The foreigners in the music and dances categories are mostly westerners. 3.The most popular topic chosen in the performance productions concerns about love, thereby reflecting the degree of openness of the society. The major functions of the National Theater can be found in the education of the public and contribution to tourist attraction. However, it has a weakness in providing a stage for students’ performance. 4.A definite, precise definition for the term “performance act”, which tends to be confused with another term “theatrical art”, appears to be lacking in our society. 5.Music plays a different role in different types of productions as it is the most important element in both musical and theatrical productions and cannot be missing in dances as well. According to above results, this study provides some suggestions and recommendations for performers, audience, cultural observers as well as future researchers. They are as follows: 1.In addition to improve one’s professional skills, performers should develop and carry out contemporary performance art and theories in accordance with the flow of social changes. 2.The audience may broaden their views by attending various types of performance art in order to develop different sentiments for the arts through acquaintance with the forms and contents. 3.Performance art is an intuitive and affective type of art, and its content, including sarcasm or metaphors, is tightly connected to the development of the society. As a result, performance art can be a good source for social observation and culture study. 4.There are many aspects of performance art await for further exploration, which should be investigated from the perspective and altitude of human culture in order to avoid forming theories in a vacuum. 5.“Serving the public” should be the basis of program planning. Also, different types of programs and activities should be provided to target audience of different classes and clans. It is important for the theater to be become a symbol of culture by incorporating performance arts into people’s lives. Liu WunLiu 劉文六 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 234 zh-TW
