For China, Vietnam is the required place to enter the Southeast Asian countries, and there are frequent political activities between them. After the two countries established diplomatic ties in 1950, Vietnam was at the time in the war against France and the United States. As China had the ideology fit with Vietnam by that time and wanted to ensure the security of the southern part, China assisted Vietnam fully in terms of military and economy. For certain reasons, however, the relationship between the two countries became tense and exacerbated since Vietnam got united. A war in the borderline broke out in 1979 and the two countries’ relationship downed to frozen. They started to seek for the normalization of their relationship and even full cooperation after 1991 on account of international and regional changes along with a need for economical reform in both countries. After 1991 when the two countries’ relation became normal, their relation had been shown significant progress in political and economic aspects, but some uncertainties and unsteady factors still existed. Therefore, this paper focuses on the main measures adopted to strengthen Vietnam and China’s bilateral security relation, and the main factors influencing their mutual security after the normalization of their relationship.
