Typical Buildings located in the Los Angeles area were assumed, and the designs were conducted based on 2003 IBC、ASCE 7-02、and ACI 318-02. Then the Structures were analyzed according to the simplified nonlinear analysis specified in ATC-40. Finally, the seismic performance of each building was compared to the “Life Safety” criterion proposed in FEMA-356. Results of the analysis showed that for structures with soft-story, Life safety criterion cannot be reached under the design based earthquake.
