Previous researches confirmed the combined aerobic and resistance exercises are the best methods for controlling type 2 diabetes and or delaying complications compared to either aerobic exercise or resistance exercise alone. However, there is only aerobic exercise education and its relevant materials, and lack of resistance exercise education or its relevant materials for type 2 diabetic patient in hospitals or health sectors in Taiwan. The purposes of this study were to investigate the concurrent knowledge and behavioral of implementing resistance exercise in type 2 diabetic patient in the shared care network of diabetes mellitus, and the effect of resistance exercise education on their knowledge, behavioral and physiological indicators. A quasi-experimental design was conducted by using convenient sampling with 71 type 2 diabetic patients from a hospital in Hualien from March 15 to June 30, 2007. Control and experimental subjects were weekly separately selected at the same clinic. Subjects in both groups had regularly received health and exercise education. Experimental subjects received an intervention of individual resistance exercise education with 「the resistance exercise education handbook for type II diabetic patient」 which was edited by the researcher. Both experimental and control subjects received telephone interview at 1st, 4th and 9th week after the intervention, and returned to clinic and received posttest at 12th week. Results showed that knowledge score of implementing resistance exercise and exercise behavior score were significantly increased (p<.01), and physiological indicators including body weight, waist and hip circumferences, body mass index, body fat percentage and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly decreased (p<.01) in experimental subjects after the intervention. Whereas body weight, waist, hip circumferences, and body mass index in control subjects were significantly decreased (p<.05) as well. However, after using ANACOVA analysis, the decrease of body weight, waist and hip circumferences in experimental subjects was significantly superior to those in control subjects, and the decrease of body mass index was not significantly different in both groups. In conclusion, resistance exercise education surely enhanced knowledge on implementing resistance exercise and exercise behavior, decreased physiological indicators including body weight, waist and hip circumferences, body fat, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes. This study confirmed the content of the resistance exercise education is an effective reference material for health professionals to provide health education in hospitals and health sectors.
