Summary: | 碩士 === 世新大學 === 行政管理學研究所(含博、碩專班) === 95 === Since the establishment of the Public Administration department of National Chengchi University in 1963 that opened the door of independent discipline, the history of public administration in Taiwan is 44 years to date. With efforts of many teachers, students, and predecessors, quantity and quality of the academic research and practical analysis in each subject increase rapidly. Yet, the empirical research that discusses the development of research fields and methods in a discipline is slightly insufficient, so development characteristics and research interests of the entire discipline are not clear and its future development is not definite. Hence, this study applies the content analysis to master’s theses of Taiwanese public administration departments in 1997-2006, and widely analyzes the research fields and methods of 1,380 master’s theses. Research method is subdivided into methods for data collection, pretest, sampling, and quantitative data analysis, and its successful cases, return rate, and research subjects.
This study concludes that as to the research field, the subject of public management takes account of 16.2% and that of public administration theory 2.0%. As to the research method, the percentage of qualitative study, quantitative study, and mixing study is 59.4%, 11.7%, and 28.9% respectively. After the crossover analysis the study notes: 1. research methods will sway the choice of research fields. 2. Emerging research fields increase with the time. 3. Research methods will not be the integration of qualitative study and quantitative study; most of them are qualitative study. 4. Research fields are influenced by researchers’ writing background. 5. Research methods are swayed by the history of departments or graduate institute and the location of universities researchers graduate from. 6. Research fields and methods are affected by the educational background and nationality of researcher’s advising professors.
