It describes how a brave Jew gave his mates hope in the ghetto where communication equipment like radios were not allowed. In order to save his mate Mischa who wanted to steal potatoes from the German soldiers, Jakob Heym, the brave Jew, told Mischa he had a radio and told him that the Russian army would soon come to ghetto to save them. From then on, Jakob’s fictitious radio was the only hope for the Jews of the ghetto. It was the only thing that helped them to look forward to the future. The genocide of the Jews during WWII is a true historic tragedy. This event represents not only the political problems of the Nazis, but also the differences and conflicts in a multicultural society. Treating people wit respect and tolerating differences are the most important ways of mollifying conflicts. In this novel “choice” is another way for individual to avoid these tragedies. Because the individual can always decide whether to do something good or to do something bad, as long as he or she knows how to judge the difference between the two. How the author thought abort the holocaust, “choice” of the individual and the fate of the ghetto-residents like Jakob in this novel will all be looked at in depth in this thesis.
