It has four chapters, with a Conclusion. Chapter One is the Introduction; Chapter Two introduces the general process and purposes of the offering ritual as well as types of the language used in the ritual; Chapter Three covers types of vocal and instrumental musical elements and their specific and common features; and Chapter Four covers the symbolic meanings and functions of those musical elements used in the ritual and it also covers the ways how shamans create and transmit their chanting. Musical scores transcribed tones and rhythms of shamanic chanting are attached in Chapter Three and photos of different shamans in their offering rituals, of shamanic costumes, and of musical instruments are included in Appendixes. Since the recordings and scores of shamanic ritual songs are hardly found, melodies sung in personal shaman’s performance are used as source. The conclusions and opinions of scholars from Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Russia, Europe and America have been considered comparatively. Musical elements are analyzed and interpreted in the social and cultural contexts of the local people. Hui-Shan Chen 陳慧珊 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 105 en_US
