Weaving has a tough history of over 60 years in Taiwan. While this art went through a lot of difficulties, it is worth noticing that how come each phase of the development cannot root itself deeply in the society. At the current state, is the future of weaving clear and hopeful? This work aims to reveal and explore the history of weaving through Lo Jin-Wei’s experience, backgrounds of and relationships among Lo, Chen Chin-Lin, and other students of Taiwan Natural Dyehouse (CCA certified Taiwan Craft Family). Through the camera, audience are lead into the world of weaving, which all the mentioned have dedicated themselves to. Weaving, as one type of arts, in Taiwan is gradually unveiled through their lives in the past, present and future. Under their effort, weaving is becoming more modernized and commercialized. “Lohas Way,” a brand created by TND Textiles, Inc., intends to lead the trend of natural fashion in clothing. The focus of their corporate culture is centered on pursuing an easy lifestyle, health, and sustainability.
This work reveals the history and status quo of weaving industry by documenting lives of a group of people. Two main themes of this work are “heritage” and
“commercialization of traditional arts,” discussed through the following perspectives: (1) supporting local arts creation and discussing the development and modernization of weaving culture in Taiwan (2) focusing on creators’ future and the heritage and transformation of traditional arts (3) discussing the future of commercialized traditional arts.
It is desired that the progress and current state of Taiwan weaving arts can be fully understood by the audience and that their effort to adopt Lohas, the healthy and environmental way of living, be appreciated. We expect to present arts in an easy and respectful way so as to draw the audience closer to traditional arts.
