Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺灣大學 === 經濟學研究所 === 95 === The purpose of the study is to investigate the motivation and strategies of three banks: UBS of Switzerland, Kookmin Bank of South Korea, and Mizuho Group of Japan. Inducing from the literature, we propose four propositions on growth motivation and growth patterns of banks to fit our observations from the above three cases:
(1) The size of a bank is positively correlated with the economic prospect of a market where it locates;
(2) The size of a bank is positively correlated with the size of a market where it locates; intuitively, the bigger the appetite that place has for financial services, the more profitable for a bank to expand;
(3) The larger the bank, the more likely it expands; such large banks tend to take R&D as well as M&A strategies;
(4) A rational bank is inclined to pursuing economies of scale (or scope) so as to minimize operation cost; As such, a bank is more likely to take R&D and M&A strategies.
Through case studies, we observe that historical big events did make influence on banks’ growth patterns. Hence we conclude that such factors unquantifiable in the literature as government policy or business culture are determinants of bank growth motivation and growth patterns.
