Baseball can be called the “national ball” in Taiwan. Numerous superior player were cultivated in east of Taiwan, and some of them even became world-renowned. The purpose of this study was to explore the baseball development at different levels of schools in Taitung County. I hope that the results of this study could be beneficial for the related researches and the future reference. The methods of this thesis were historical researches, literature analysis and interviews. The research objects were the different levels of schools in Taitung County from 1945 to 2005. The conclusions of the thesis were listed below:
1. Different levels of schools in Taitung County have established a good foundation of baseball movement since the early Japan-governed period in Taiwan. Many excellent players, especially those aborigines with innate abilities, caused great sensations in Japan. Therefore, Taitung County became a place for Japanese to discover the superior players. During the period from 1945 to 1968, the energy of the baseball development had advanced gradually. The nationwide baseball upsurge had been raised by the Hon-Yei Youth Baseball Team because they won the world championship.
2. From 1968 to 1990, the baseball movement flourished in different levels of schools in Taitung Country because Taiwan baseball team attended the Little League Baseball of the world and won the world champion. The other reason was that many baseball committees and the school principals supported this sport with great enthusiasm. Nevertheless, the baseball development had declined afterward due to the insufficient budget for training baseball teams. Besides many schools in the west of Taiwan recruited the great Taitung players to play for other counties.
3. From 1990 to 2005, the Ministry of Education founded the baseball league to hold tournaments in elementary schools and junior highs. By formulating the rules for student baseball players, the recruitment has been obstructed. The baseball movement flourished again since the local government, the school principals and many people supported it with great enthusiasm. The Youth Baseball Teams even obtained the world championship many times. However, the baseball development confronted a significant challenge recently because of the gradual reduction in training budget and resources. These factors also influenced the quality of players and the training effect of the baseball teams.
