Millais’ works had diverse motifs and genres between 1848 and 1860. This thesis focuses on Millais’ pieces in the Pre-Raphaelite period, and discusses their connotations and ingenuity respectively. Millais’ painting style manifested a great change after he left the Pre-Raphaelite period, which, as a result, got mixed reviews. His background and the creative context of his works may serve as indispensable clues to repositioning Millais. A discussion on them is included in the study. This thesis also deals with Millais’ works in terms of his social background, motifs, genres, and the conversion after he left the Pre-Raphaelite period. The first chapter gives a brief review on Victorian art, how Millais developed his artistic skills and the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and its influence on Millais. Chapter two intends to take a close look at the motifs of Millais’ artwork. Not only are the contents analyzed, the images of women constructed in his works will also be discussed. In chapter three, Millais’ styles are examined from the perspective of medievalism, the symbolic language and natural realism in order to convey their uniqueness. In chapter four, Millais’ subjects and style in his Pre-Raphaelite period are compared with those after that period. The mixed reviews are then examined to assess Millais’ achievement. In his Pre-Raphaelite period, Millais started a whole new page for the English art history and enriched art in the Victorian Age. As his artistic career continued, Millais never stopped displaying innovative style, popularizing his art, and striking a balance between high and popular arts. Millais definitely made an indisputable contribution to the development of art history. Ming Tsuey Ni 倪明萃 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 301 zh-TW
