The measurement of dissolved trace metals was employed the APDC/DDDC (ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate/diethyl diamonium dithiocarbamate) method and used the furnace atomic adsorption spectrophotometer to determine the extracted solution. The concentration ranges of dissolved trace metals in northern Taiwan Strait were as follow: Cd,0.09-0.33 nM;Cu,1.17-11.09 nM;Fe,2.51-320.18 nM;Mn,1.13-25.9 nM;Ni,0.72-16.28 nM;Pb,0.05-0.53 nM and Zn,1.5-11.5 nM。The results indicated that the concentration of dissolved trace metals generally decreased seaward and the lowest concentration was observed in the central northern Taiwan Strait. It is also found that the concentrations of dissolved trace metals at stations adjacent of the mainland China were in general higher than those at stations close to Taiwan. This result may imply that the riverine input of trace metals from the Fujiang province was higher than that of northern Taiwan. The statistic method, principal component analysis, was used to examine distribution of trace metals in the study area. It was found that Mn, Pb and Zn were located in the same axis in the plot of the first two principal component loadings, which differed from the plot of Cu and Ni. This result may suggest that geochemical behavior of Mn, Pb and Zn differed from Cu and Ni.
