To hydrolyze the cell wall of Chlorella, a cellulase-producing bacterium, Cellulomonas sp. was isolated and used to produce cellulase for the hydrolysis of chlorella cell wall. The cellulase activity could reach 1320 U/ml after 3 day fermentation in a 5-L fermenter at 100% DO and 50 rpm. No significant difference in cellulase activity was observed between those spray-dried with 10 and 15 % dextrin carrier. However, the spray-dried samples were unstable, even stored at 4 oC with vacuum packing, almost 80% activity was lost after 8 wks storage. Contents of proteins, peptides and chlorophyll of both Chlorella powders dried at low temperature and spray drying increased after 3 hr hydrolysis. According to microscopic and SEM observations, Chlorella cell wall was obviously hydrolyzed. The aggregates of chlorella cells after spray-drying could be hydrolyzed into cell individuals with 150 U/ml of cellulase. Increases in the contents of chlorophyll and the xanthophylls after 2 hr hydrolysis with 300U/ml suggested the lysis of chlorella cell walls.
