This research was based on the form of an action research, accompanied with observations, questionnaires and interviews. The research subject included 39 8th graders in Taipei County. The research was conducted in nine weeks, starting from 23 October to 25 December in the year of 2006. Research instruments included worksheets,“examination of learning results”and“investigation of attitudes towards classical music”; teaching journals and student interviews were supportive to data analysis. The findings of this research are stated as follows: 1. The notion of curriculum planning in“Integrating Classical Music into Popular Music”emphasizes the combination of students’ musical experiences with one musical element-melody. Using the same melody in classical music into different popular songs motived students and extended their interest in classical music learning. 2. The curriculum planning in“Integrating Classical Music into Popular Music”had a positive influence on students’ attitude towards classical music learning. a. In the action research, students’ reactions towards learning were positive. The students were excited and looking forward to the curriculum of“Integrating Classical Music into Popular Music”. The context of the curriculum plan was diversified, students’ participation rates were high. Overall, students showed positive learning outcomes. b. The curriculum of“Integrating Classical Music into Popular Music”helped students in raising awareness towards the attitudes of learning classical music. In the action research, students were able to notice the musical instruments used in the classical music and how the classical music was integrated into popular songs. Students were able to gain a deeper understanding of the music and its composer. Outside of class, students actively listened to classical music, learning related information and enhanced their own knowldge and attitudes towards classical music. 3. Reflection of the researcher In the action research, the teacher guides the students to learn the language of music, thus helped elevate students’ knowledge and build a positive attitude towards classical music. With a variety of teaching activities, students were able to raise their learning interests and established a sense of achievement. In addition, teacher’s provision of abundant media information promoted students’ learning outcomes.
