From the rising, bloom and expansion of the early harbor district, to the declining of the vicinity, then to the modern times zoning and re-plotting of the area, the scope of the research is intended to examine the effect of the spatial development on the geographic, economic aspects and on the development and lifestyles of the locals. I. Five Channels Harbor as the gateway to the Taiwan Prefecture City. -of the Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing ear. a. The geographic and economic conditions for the rise of the Five Channels Harbor District; b. Building of the Arch for Government Reception – to manifest the importance of the portal; c. The five families and the lifestyle of the locals under the influence of the labor force distribution. II. Substitutions under the geographical un-stability of the coastal area. -of Daoguang era to the end of Cing dynasty a. The influence of natural disasters and human factors to the harbor waterway; b. The urban planning and development with geographic un-stability. III. The neighborhood development under the chessboard-like street planning. -of the Japanese Governance Period a. Rezoning of the Five Channels Harbor District; b. Reshaping the economy and the activities of the local residents; c. Utilizing the silted up channels. IV. An urban recreational space upon replotting -post Japanese Era a. Old downtown Tainan after the glory. b. Spatial policy – •The transformation and processes of the Hai-an Road Underground Avenue Project. •The establishment of the Old Five Channels Cultural Zone c. Lifestyles of the locals. Through close examination of the spatial changes, economics relations and the stablishment of the social culture over different periods of time and with those as the emphasis, the study aims to explore the influence which this area brought upon the development of the Taiwan Prefecture City – Tainan.
