The subjects included control and experimental groups for a total of 117 students in the 4th grade at Fusing Elementary School in Tainan City. Through the “mathematical introspection sheet” writing activity, students could communicate the concepts they have learnt, thoughts and thinking process through written language; so as to review and reflect their cognitive process in order to construct their personal new knowledge and gain effective results from the cognitive activity. Statistical methods of t-test and one-way ANOVA were applied to investigate the efficiency of the “mathematics introspection sheet” writing activity on improving the learning achievement in mathematics. In addition, qualitative analyses such as questionnaires and the content of the introspection sheets were used to examine the student’s opinions on this writing activity and the results. The research conclusions include: 1. The result of the statistical analysis on the post test and postpone test scores of each unit shows that the “mathematics introspection sheet” does show positive results on improving the learning achievement in the discipline of mathematics for fourth graders. 2. The improvement on the postpone test scores prove that “mathematics introspection sheet” writing activity is effective for cognitive learning of more abstract and complex mathematic concepts. 3. Through the comparison on the contents of “mathematics introspection sheet” and test scores, it is concluded that writing the “Mathematics introspection sheet” shows the effective results for upper-middle level and some lower-middle level students. 4. The questionnaires and content of interviews concluded that the “mathematics introspection sheet” is a pressure-free and widely-accepted learning activity.
