Thirty participants who majored in piano were included in this study. All participants are tested individually in the 3 paired conditions. First, they were asked to play the same repertoires rearrange with blocked chords or broken chords Second, they were asked to play same repertoires but with different key signatures. Third, they had to perform the sight playing scores with normal immediate sound feedback and without the feedback. The repertoires for sight playing examination are adapted from Bach Choralgesange, Bach Little Prelude, Haydn Piano Sonatas, Mendelssohn Songs without Words, and Bartok Microkosmos. There were totally 32 task paired repertoires in each section and the order within each section was mixed to reduce the learning effect. Their performance of the pitch and rhythm was analyzed by the software “Finale Performance Assessment”. Additionally, participants were asked several questions about the degree of difficulty and the possible contributing factors of the sight reading task. The results showed that participants played better in patterns of blocked chords than in patterns of broken chords. The participants also played better with less sharps or flats in key signature. However, There was no significant difference between play with and without sound feedback. 16 of 30 participants (53.3%) considered that the songs with blocked chords were easier, and all of the participants felt the repertoires with less sharps and flats in key signature were easier. Participants had various opinions about playing with or without sound playback. In 6 of 30 participants (20%), claimed that songs played with sound playback were easier. Another 6 participants had the opposite opinion. The remained participants (60%) claimed that there were no difference, or it depended on the piece and the order of playing in these two conditions. In conclusion, this study showed that both the ways of chord playing” and different key signatures affects piano sight playing, but not the immediate sound feedback.
