For MNCs, the transfer and utilization of knowledge is a key factor for running a foreign subsidiary. Hence, this research aims to explore the subsidiary’s knowledge transfer with Taiwanese HQ and its foreign production network members in order to improve its competitiveness. Based on resource dependence and social capital theory, this research examines the effectiveness of knowledge transfer between case companies and its organization members (i.e., HQ and foreign production network members). Several propositions were proposed through deep interviews with two Taiwanese firms investing in Vietnam. This research found that the degree of resource dependence and environmental uncertainties (resource dependence theory), and network ties, network centrality, social interaction, trust and shared vision and values (social capital theory) have influence the knowledge transfer effectiveness of case companies. In addition, the author also discovers that the “absorptive capacity of employees” plays an important role in affecting knowledge transfer effectiveness of case companies. Finally, some recommendations were made for Taiwanese corporations investing in Vietnam. Under the trend of globalization, the strategy used by Multinational Corporations (MNCs) to step into overseas markets is to establish subsidiaries in foreign countries.
Key words: Vietnam, knowledge transfer, resource dependence, social capital
