碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 視覺設計學系 === 95 === Filled with busy schedules and pressed by limited space、life in modern cities is becoming increasingly unbearable. For many、relief could be best found in a dreamland of peace and tranquility as depicted in Tao Yuan-Ming’s 「Utopia-on Peach-Blossom Spring」. The natural settings are so appealing that people would travel hundreds of kilometers just to surround themselves with mountains and waters. For them、it would truly be like a dream come true if the natural settings could be replicated in the cities where their daily lives are conducted. Motivated to make lives in modern cities more enjoyable、this Work is designed to create a dreamland at daily surroundings by virtually transplanting into a modern city setting the peace and tranquility depicted in Tao Yuan-Ming’s Utopia. Methodologically、this Work is to digitally bring about the peace and tranquility presented by traditional ink arts. With in-depth understandings of traditional Chinese ink paintings and of aesthetics thoughts in the Wei and Jing dynasties、the Author embarked on the Work by first re-writing Tao Yuan-Ming’s 「on Peach-Blossom Spring」 to incorporate modern cities as its background settings. The words were then transformed into visual animations. Finally、various space-and-form possibilities were explored with the help of digital technology in a search for dreamlands that could be customized to individual needs. In summary、achievements of this Work include 1. Conceptual presentation of traditional ink arts by 3-D digital media—This is achieved with in-depth understandings of traditional Chinese aesthetics thoughts and of the conceptual presentation of Chinese ink paintings. In doing so、this Work opens up a new frontier for digital technology and its applications; 2. Creation of Utopia customized to individual needs in modern city settings— By digitally generating a new 3-D modern city setting、and presenting the new perspective in the form of animations via digital media、this Work would inspire new space-and-form perspectives toward modern cities 3. Transformation of invisible concepts into visual images/animations – This Work pioneered the transformation between writings of different eras、and the transformation between writings and visual images. It is envisioned that the experiments would enable new expression techniques and find new applications of digital technology. 4. Reflection of the Author’s philosophy toward life – The process of creation provides one with great opportunities to contemplate and appreciate. As such、this Work is an embodiment of the Author’s philosophy and appreciation for a creative life. It is such an extraordinarily rewarding experience to see his/her concepts transformed into lively images and animations that digital media itself is considered a Utopia for an image-creator. As such、the Author feels the he has created a dreamland for himself while trying to create one for others.
