The researcher applied the quasi-experiment design method. 14 participants from a vocation training organization in Kaohsiung were recruited as the experimental group, and 16 participants of a vocation training organization in Taipei were assigned to control group. The experimental group received an 11-week reality therapy group counseling for 2 hours per week. The control group did not received any group treatment except one day workshop on concepts of reality therapy after the completion of the experiment. The “Tennessee Self-Concept Scale II,” and “Locus of Control Scale” were administered to participants of both groups before and after the treatment. The follow-up test was done 4 weeks after the end of group treatment. The one-way analysis of covariance and nonparametric test were used to analyze the data. In addition, the individual interview was conducted to gain the trainees and class teachers’ perceptions about the effects of the reality therapy group. The major findings of this study were as follows. The results of one way covariance analysis and nonparametric test indicated that there was an immediate effect on enhancing locus of control and familial self-concept for participants in experimental group as compared to control group. However, there were no significant effects on raising their self-concept of the total score, physical self-concept, psychological self-concept, moral self-concept, social self-concept, self-concept on school lessons/works, self-identity, self-satisfied, and self-behaved. The follow-up test showed the retention effect of reality therapy group on enhancing locus of control, familial self-concept and self-concept on school lessons/works, but no significant effect on raising their self-concept of the total score, physical self-concept, psychological self-concept, moral self-concept and social self-concept, self-identity, self-satisfied, and self-behaved. The participants’ self-reports benefits gained from reality therapy group were concluded as nine categories, including :exercising procedure of action changing , promoting locus of control, developing socializing techniques, encouraging altruism, improving self-acquaintance, increasing active expression, promoting interpersonal skills, producing universality and accepting disability. The opinions from teachers could be grouped into seven items: exercising procedure of action changing, promoting locus of control, developing socializing techniques, encouraging altruism, improving self-acquaintance , increasing active expression, and producing sense of hope. Finally, results of the study were discussed and suggestions were proposed for application of reality therapy on individual with physical disabilities and future study.
