The subjects were one hundred and sixty-nine first-year senior high students studying in St. Dominic High School in Kaohsiung. The researcher adopted two questionnaires---the Questionnaire of the Senior High Students’ Background and Their English Learning in Taiwan and the Questionnaire of the Senior High Students’ Attitudes towards English Learning in Taiwan as the instruments in the study. In addition, from the two questionnaires, the information of subjects’ learning background was discussed in this thesis. The main findings of this study are as follows: 1. The researcher found that the listening and reading abilities of the students participating in the bilingual program (hereafter, BS) are superior to those who didn’t participate in the bilingual program (hereafter, Non-BS). For instance, listening test (1) (t=13.535, p<.001) and listening test (2) (t=7.566, p<.01) appeared most significantly different and distinct. The first listening grades of the BS (Mean=9.05) are superior to those of the Non-BS (Mean=8.53). Besides, the first reading test has obvious difference (t=6.238, p<.05). The grades of the Non-BS (Mean=9.87) are inferior to those of the BS (Mean=11.14) on the first reading test. 2. Different subjects have different learning attitudes. But so far, from the aspect of overall learning attitudes, almost more than half of the senior high students agreed (33.5%) and strongly agreed (59.5%) that learning English is an important thing. 3. As for the attitudes towards English learning between the BS and the Non-BS, the researcher discovered two obvious differences. First, the thought that English learning is very important was far more significantly valued by the BS (t=4.412, p<.05). Second, the BS (t=4.388, p<.05) was more active in participating in class activities than the Non-BS. On the basis of the findings, the researcher suggests that the Ministry of Education had best revise the Educational Act that Taiwanese students have to learn English from the third graders and English is regarded as a required subject in primary school too. In addition, the BS proved is superior to the Non-BS in various ways of learning English, so the researcher also has a suggestion that bilingual education is no longer an experimental theory and ought to be incorporated in the regular class attached to the general English lessons in junior high school. 鍾榮富 學位論文 ; thesis 96 en_US |

This study aimed to investigate the effects of bilingual program on English learning in senior high in Taiwan.
The main findings of this study are as follows:
