This is meant to avoid or diminish technical communication barricades of different professions worldwide. Computer information technology is one of the leading professions and Taiwan is one of the largest notebook computer manufacturers. It is obvious that this profession and the ability to communicate with other nations are important to Taiwan. However, there is not much study on the German-Chinese computing terminology among the limited papers regarding bilingual or multilingual terminology. Moreover, the German or German-Chinese references in computing terminology are limited in Taiwan. This phenomenon exposes the lack of studies in bilingual or multilingual terminology and the shortage of references in this area. It also signifies the importance of carrying out studies in German-Chinese computing terminology. Based on the aforementioned facts and insight, this paper is aimed to build a basic glossary of German-Chinese terminology of personal computer specification and to take a further step to explore the characteristics of the terminological word formation that used in this profession. This study could also be used in the research of bilingual or multilingual terminology in computing or other professions. It can be served as a reference for the German-Chinese translators and a supplementary teaching material of German-Chinese study. In the other aspects, it can act as a catalyst of further research and study in this aspect. There are two main components in this paper. The first component is to build a German-Chinese glossary of the personal computer specification. This will be completed by comparing the German and Chinese specifications of the same local branded computer model from the Taiwanese computer manufacturers. The extracted information will then be transformed into a cross tabulation of German and Chinese terminology. An itemized German-Chinese computer glossary will be generated in accordance of the technical terms that found in the available references in and outside of the country. The second component is attributing the German and Chinese terminologies from the first component. Since the development of computing has a very strong American background, this paper will also focus on the use of borrowing in computing terminology. There are five characteristics: metaphor, compound word, derivation, abbreviation and borrowing. Among them, borrowing, includes borrowing of abbreviation, is the most common and essential characteristic. After a further analysis of the influence on technical and professional languages, it is to believe that borrowing of technical terminology could minimize the divergence when communicating globally and the universal terms will have important impact on receiving new technology. However, there are also downturns and disturbances arise in the process of borrowing. The varied regulations on word formation and various terms with the same meaning that would be a potential barricade to technical communication. Shu-Mei Shieh 謝淑媚 2007 學位論文 ; thesis 152 zh-TW |
