The prototype of [KIKU] is “outward elements flows onto an object inwardly”. So-called the meaning diversion of semantic extension is from “Figure and Ground” “Synaesthesia metaphor”, etc. Furthermore, this research will deeply explore the relation between the noting of five Mandarin characters “聞く”/“聴く”/“訊く”/“利く”/“効く”connected to [KIKU] and their meanings. Although in viewpoint of Muto (2001) that there is no relation between Mandarin noting and meaning, this research will inspect its relation in Japanese and Mandarin. Hopefully, it is able to make the entire polysemous cognition structure of [KIKU] more explicit through the analysis of its polysemous structure and Mandarin noting.
