In this process, 「knowledge」replaces other traditional resources, such as money and land, and it becomes the most critical resource in the course of economic development. The demandingness of 「knowledge」 in the society has led the society to pay much attention on Universities that focus on knowledge-production and knowledge–communication. It requires not only educating talent people in the field of a knowledge-based economy, but also expecting these Universities can be leaders to guide the development of social economy.      Era’s change results in stretch-forced dialogues between society, university and the idea of the university. Deriving from these dialogues, this dissertation investigates the meaning of the past idea of the university on current university, based on Newman’s idea of the university and the issues faced by today’s university. This essay will further review Newman’s 「liberal knowledge」from Polanyi’s 「tacit knowledge」point of view, in order to search for the realistic meaning of the idea of the university on a knowledge-based economy age.
