This study expects to understand the effect of the resource room students when they learn visual arts. It is through exploring how the visual art learning is practiced in the resource room and how the curriculum are recognized by both of the resource teachers and regular teachers. The study also investigated the concepts and attitudes of parents, mentors in regular classes, and resource teachers towards visual arts. The practices observed will help to realize the condition of visual arts teaching and then to discuss the importance of the teaching practice.
The approach is through multiple ways: literature review, interview, examination of visual art materials, analysis of students’ works, and classroom setting observation. The findings are: first, the learning achievement of the resource room students differs from those in regular classes though they age the same. Moreover, the difference depends on the categories of special needs. Second, the importance lies on that any other subjects can never replace the visual arts in resource rooms. Third, the teaching practices of visual arts cannot meet the individual needs of resource room students both in resource rooms and regular classes. Furthermore, the regular teachers of visual arts assess the resource room students based on the principles of the subject and theories of special education. Last but not the least, there are some problems difficult to conquer in teaching visual arts to the resource room students.
The suggestions to the curriculum design, practice, and for the future research are all made in the end.
Key words: resource room students, regular students, visual art, learning of visual art
